Using publicly available data from the US Department of Education, the NCAA, and institutions’ athletic rosters, we document several novel facts. We show that elite institutions enroll more athletes and field more varsity teams than even the largest public institutions, despite having drastically smaller student bodies. A one-dollar increase in tuition leads to a 45 to 62 cent reduction in fees, as institutions raise or introduce new fees when tuition increases are limited. Using an instrumental variable approach, I find that while the fee share has a negligible effect on first-time college enrollment, it significantly reduces STEM major completions.
